KATHINA

Kathina is a traditional gunpowder-based firecracker used in certain temple rituals. It consists of a cast iron body with vertical cavities. These cavities hold gunpowder and a laterite stone plug.

A small horizontal vent hole is provided at the bottom of the main cavity. During preparation, gunpowder is placed inside the cavity and the laterite stone is compacted over it, forming a tight fit. A small portion of the gunpowder remains exposed through the bottom vent hole.

When this exposed gunpowder is ignited, the rapid combustion generates pressure inside the cavity, forcing the laterite stone out through the main opening with a loud explosive sound. The effect is primarily acoustic and ceremonial, forming part of the ritual tradition. This is called Vedikkettu. (The purpose is sound and spectacle, not firing a projectile.)

This ritual is used in festivals particularly in temples of Kerala.
